We have become so accustomed to wearing it.&nbsp; It perceives touch, temperature, and carries the essence of our existence. Yet, it rejuvenates itself every 28 days. 28 days - it is hardly enough time for us to get used to it. Perhaps that's why we've chosen to wear clothes. Clothes will not abandon us; we hold the dominant role in this partnership. We decide how and when to adorn ourselves and when to send them to the charity shop around the corner. But I guess it is not enrirely true. We decorate ourselves to create a persona for our social lives. We invest fortunes in digital outfits for avatars in video games (funny enough those digital outfits for avatars are called “skins” by Chinese players). We indulge in luxury brands to join a prestigious "elite" circle. Clothes are no longer just shields for our physical beings against the outside world. Perhaps your Heat-tech tells a different story, but my point is that clothes also serve to protect us from our self-destructive tendencies. In this ongoing capsule collection, I have designed a set of 3D-printable modern armor, drawing inspiration from the interlocking structure of chainmail. Some claim that armor is for the weak, and although I once hesitated to acknowledge my own vulnerability as a woman in a patriarchal world (which is gradually improving or at least I hope it is), I now understand the importance of confronting our weaknesses. I aim to provide a set of armor that will always be available to those who may need it, regardless of when or who they are. https://ciccylyu.com/Speak-Slow SPEAK SLOW There is an obsession with the linear fluidity of time that lies deep inside of my heart. I have grown a peculiar fear of shiny, metallic, smooth façades of architectures recently. Maybe it is because the immortality those perfection represent could not bear any memory of the city. I fall in love deeply into marks on surfaces, the rusts on metal and scars on our skin. They are the medium that connect us to the years we have gone through, the time that flew by and the memories we bear. This capsule collection I created is a quiet, sentimental celebration of time, memories and decomposition. ciccylyu.com https://ciccylyu.com/Fancy-a-Slice-of-Me FANCY A SLICE OF ME Ciccy used her body as the critical element in this collection, as objectification of her ethnicity, gender and identification. In other words, her “they-self”. The designer regards the verbal and physical manipulation of “others” targeting her body as an act of shaping the so-called “they-self”. Slice as another crucial feature, could trace back to her early education in medicine. The designer esteems the observation of human tissue slices as an objective method to acknowledge physical beings. By the action of deconstructing the body into slices and reconstructing them piece by piece, Ciccy reproduced the abstract birth of the “they-self”. Drawing from her personal experience, Ciccy considers the process of slicing her physical body as self-research, through which she discusses the contradiction of the necessary existence of the “they-self”.
